Curated by Ayeesha Ash (Black Birds) and Sela Vai (Black Birds, You Therefore Me)
Black Birds is a Sydney based company which was founded in 2015 by Ayeesha Ash & Emele Ugavule. The company is led by Artistic Director, Ayeesha Ash, with support from Community Outreach Officer, Emele Ugavule and Resident Choreographer, Sela Vai. It is a response to the lack of representation & misrepresentation of Women of Colour in the Australian arts. With each project, creatives are invited to collaborate on works that dissect and document the female Black and Brown diasporic experience in Australia through art and performance in a variety of mediums and spaces - both theatrical and non-theatrical. Black Birds prides itself on making work that is intersectional, interdisciplinary and intercultural. We strive to create work that is culturally, financially and physically accessible; work that challenges the norm and starts the conversation.
You Therefore Me is an intersectional movement for dance creatives. Championing all things empowering and unbound, we play our pART in the generation of change-makers. I am all that I am because of you: the choices you make/the beauty you acknowledge/the truth you voice. And vice versa. You, Therefore, Me. Driven by this philosophy, the movement aims to connect people through accountability. For the past two years, You Therefore Me has been touring artistic development programs for young dancers around Sydney and Singapore. More recently, a sub-program called "You Therefore She" has been taking place in Sydney, aiming to connect, up-skill and empower womxn of all walks of life, inclusive of those femme/female-identifying/non-binary. A safe space for womxn to explore their artistry to the ends of their unbound potential.
This event will allow for those womxn to showcase what they create, a platform to collaborate and share.
