PACT PRESENTS...

THE WHALE CHORUS

dance, theatre, magic...

Bursting at the seams with song, dance and spectacle, a new company The Whale Chorus presents its self-titled two-week season at PACT Theatre, Sydney. The team’s raw energy and bizarre humour reveal themselves in a heroic debut performance.

“refashioning the Australian absurd, like early Rob Quantok with a flash of Capsis’ diva, a dollop of 40’s Hollywood and jokes from Ionesco’s backroom…Gibson is mining an absurd aesthetic, which is contagious and kooky…a tongue-in-cheek aesthetic with lashings of fantasy and humour…. I was sincerely knocked out” (Caitlin Newton-Broad Associate Producer, Performance Space)

After a successful residency at PACT Theatre in January 2007 with mentor Paul Capsis, The Whale Chorus has developed an original and fantastical theatrical style setting up hilarious interactions between strange human/creatures – woman fish meets man horse– culminating in a joyful celebrative dance.

This is a theatre of magic surrealism coming from the new wave of Australian theatre artists who have been part of the Cabaret Sauvignon/Lan Francis collective.

Written and performed by Janie Gibson, Alex Grady, Matthew Prest, Phoebe Torzillo, Georgie Read.

“There was danger. There was dance and song. There was sexual tension and ambiguity. There was much heart and beauty in ‘The Whale Chorus’. I wanted more. My strong belief is that these people speak for a new generation. The energy was MAGIC. It was exhilarating…” (Paul Capsis, performer)
