Lotophagi: The Lotus Eaters

Performance & installation
by the 2007 imPACT Ensemble

PACT Theatre’s 2007 Ensemble of 17 presents a new performance/installation inspired by Homer’s The Odyssey “to eat of the lotus, the honey sweet fruit, is to lose all desire to send a message back, all memory of the journey home dissolved forever.” (Book 9).

Lotophagi is a performance/installation infused with contemporary ideas around adventuring or running away from home (for whatever reason) and longing for a home that no longer exists. Homer’s The Odyssey was written around 800BC but it still has strong resonance today. The dreaded Cyclops is transformed (think of corporations or governments that gobble up the little folk) and home may still be a dangerous place.

The audience arrive at a make shift camp, a home away from home where performers share tall tales and offer homely treats to the fellow travellers/squatters. This ‘ impermanent world’ is disrupted by a cataclysmic occurrence leading to a mass packing up and exodus. Sound artist James Brown’s design creeps into the audience’s imagination, creating a world of lurking monsters and a desire to flee.
