Artistic Policy
Kenzie Larsen’s current practice is concerned modes of participation in art making processes and various constructions of ideas of identity in individuals. Larsen is interested in turning the viewer into the subject of the art and producing systems where the viewer is given the critical role of generating content for art works. She is also interested in collective consciousness and the various ways that individuals internalize social norms and mass media in the construction of identity. Larsen works across a variety of mediums including video, performance, sculpture, installation and writing.
Current Work
The Word Game Project
The Word Game project is a large scale ongoing video project in which the content of the work is completely user generated. Participants are invited to be filmed asking three questions and giving three answers. These video files make up a large video data base which is then fed into a customised computer program that randomly selects one question file to be played followed by a randomly selected answer file. The result is an ongoing word game that produces sequence of Q and A that are absurd, hilarious, political and eerily profound. More participants are added to this work each time it is exhibited it is continually growing and changing
Assumptions Experiments
The ‘Assumptions Experiment’ is a social experiment that is framed as a game. A group of approximately 20 people are asked to arrange into formations based on personal information. The only rules are that no one is allowed to talk to work out how to arrange and that if you do not feel comfortable in the game you may leave but cannot re- enter the game. The formations that the group is asked to arrange into range from hair and skin colour gradients as well as height and nationality to religious and political beliefs and how much money you make.
Movie Memory Experiments- This work is a series of videos in which I have interviewed select volunteers and asked them to describe what happens in a movie they remember from their childhood. I then re- edit the movies they are talking about exactly as they are described. The result is a series of short films that are short versions of well known movies as remembered by different people.
